Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, Faculty of Sciences building, 2nd floor

Alkiviadis Bais graduated from the Department of Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in 1981 and received his PhD in 1985. He is a professor at the Department of Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he has been active since 1981. Since 1987 he has been teaching courses related to Atmospheric Physics in the undergraduate program of the Department of Physics and since 1993 in the Postgraduate Program of Environmental Physics. He has supervised 19 doctoral dissertations. He was Chair of the Department of Physics and Director of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics (LAP), the MSc Programme on Environmental Physics and the Department of Applied Physics and Environmental Physics. His research activities focus on ultraviolet solar radiation and the ozone layer, global change, environmental physics and remote sensing of atmospheric composition. He is actively involved in the quality control of spectral and broadband measurements of ultraviolet solar radiation, as well as in technological developments of spectral measurements conducted by LAP’s spectroradiometers. He has been principal investigator in more than 45 European and national research projects and has published more than 200 papers.

He has been a member of advisory groups of the World Meteorological Organization and member of teams involved in the preparation of international assessment reports on ozone and ultraviolet radiation. Finally, he is a permanent member of the UN Panel on Environmental Effects of Ozone Depletion and Climate Change.
