Diploma Thesis Regulation
According to the Government Gazette of PPS establishment (no. ΧΧΧΧΧ/ΧΧΧΧΧ) and the Internal Regulation of the PPS, article 8, par. C, the following apply:
The preparation of a Postgraduate Diploma Thesis is mandatory in the curriculum of the Postgraduate Program and is prepared according to the following procedure:
- The Coordinating Committee of the PPS, upon application of the candidate on specified dates, stating the proposed title of the postgraduate thesis, the proposed supervisor and attaching a summary of the proposed thesis, appoints its supervisor. All members of the teaching staff of the categories as described in article 83 of Law 4957/2022 have the right to supervise dissertations.
- The duration of the Diploma Thesis cannot be less than one academic semester.
- The elaboration of the Master’s Thesis is governed by the Code of Academic Ethics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Every author or co-creator of any intellectual work is entitled to be referred to and recognized as such, enjoying both the property and moral rights / powers deriving from that work. Exceptionally, if the original intellectual creation (‘work’) is the final export of a remunerated research work, which has been assigned by an entity outside the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the economic rights of the author or co-authors may be limited under the terms of the contract by which the research work in question is awarded, while moral rights remain with the author or creators, subject to the contractual restrictions necessary for the exploitation / economic exploitation of the produced intellectual creation.
- The thesis may be written in Greek or English. If it is written in English, an extensive abstract in Greek describing the methodology and main results of the thesis should be included in the text. During the final submission of the dissertation, the first pages of the text should mention the Institution, the School and the Postgraduate Program in which it was conducted, the supervisor and the members of the examination committee (see relevant template above). Fonts such as Calibri, Times New Roman or Arial, with a size of 12 for the body of the text and 16 or 14 for the titles of the sections/sub-sections, should be used for the writing of the thesis. The spacing between lines in body text must be 1.15 lines and the text alignment must be complete. The length of the dissertation should not be less than 50 pages, including references and table of contents.
- Upon completion of the Master’s Thesis, the postgraduate student applies to the Coordinating Committee of the Postgraduate Program for the establishment of a three-member Examination Committee for the approval of the thesis, one member of which is the supervisor. The members of the three-member Examination Committee must be specialized on the same or related scientific fields with the subject of the Postgraduate Program.
- For the presentation of the Master’s Thesis, the positive opinion of the three-member Examination Committee is foreseen. The Master’s Thesis is supported before the three-member Examination Committee at a date and place determined by the three-member Examination Committee and approved by the Director of the Postgraduate Program. The presentation is public, announced at least three (3) days before on the website of the Postgraduate Program and, under the responsibility of the Director of the Postgraduate Program, all teachers of the Postgraduate Program are informed. After the defense of the Master’s Thesis, minutes are drawn up in which the individual grade of each member of the three-member Examination Committee, the average score, as well as any other remarks are mentioned. The Master’s Thesis is approved if it is graded with a grade greater than or equal to six (6). Following its approval by the Committee, the Master’s Thesis must be posted on the website of the MSc.
- If the Master’s Thesis is not graded successfully, the postgraduate student must make corrections and additions according to the instructions of the Examination Committee and defend it orally again before the same Committee or, if there are objective reasons, by replacing the members who are unable to do attend. The second defense must take place no later than six months after the initial presentation. If the second grading is also negative, the postgraduate student loses the right to be awarded the MSc.
- In exceptional cases, if there is an objective obstacle or an important reason, it is possible to replace the supervisor or member of the three-member Examination Committee, as well as change the subject of the Master’s Thesis, following a decision of the Assembly of the School of Physics.
